Love this article about the breath. Each class I teach has focus around the breath. We live in a World that is so fast we hold or quicken our breath, forgetting it even exists, as it automatically works for us. But these quick breaths affect everything else in the body. Raising cortisol (those unfriendly stress hormones), stimulating the Fight or Flight response which creates a whole host of issues, and allowing our rib cage to literally act like a CAGE for our breath, capturing it's divine nature. Yoga gives our body and breath permission to nurture ourselves and destress without holding onto it or shortening it.
